Delay's Are Divine Appointments

By Jeanie Taylor

Romans 8:28 “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

It’s such a joy to share my 'God Adventures' and to know that others really do like reading about them! What a thrill it is to pray and ask God to guide my steps and then walk into the amazing fun adventure He has waiting for me! He wants this for all of us…not just me!

In 2015 my husband and I went to the Dominican on a vacation. Before the trip and especially on the day we departed from the DFW airport we were praying God would lead us either through airport lines, someone on the plane, restaurants, at the resort or beach to give us opportunities to share Christ and His love.

Honestly, every where we went and conversations we started were with people they were all deeply committed Christians and active in their church and bible study. How refreshing and encouraging that was to see!! But I knew there was someone God wanted us to share His love with but hadn't crossed that certain person’s path yet.

After arriving in Punta Cana and getting settled in our hotel, we met a young man that was the elevator operator. Not that we really needed someone to punch our elevator buttons it was still nice see this simple job was a way to provide for this young man. Each day he stood outside the elevator with such a sad face. We tried many times to make small talk with him and show our appreciation for his service. He had no desire to carry on a conversation and even when this gringo husband from Texas spoke in Spanish it didn't break the ice.

I only know how to count to 10 and maybe 5 words in Spanish so I wanted to give it a shot. I knew how to say, "Jesus Loves You" so with a big grin in my twangy accent I proudly blurted out, 'Jesús te ama'!!! Throughout the day when I caught his eye I would shout, "Jesus te ama"!! It wasn't too many times after that he FINALLY cracked a small smile.

I think I might have heard him say under his breath, ""esa dama está loca"!!

Soon we left that tropical paradise and arrived at a very congested and chaotic airport. There were many long lines, frantic airline employees and 100s of impatient passengers scrambling to figure out what to do next because of rerouting and cancelled flights. For about 5 hours we stood in several lines leaning on our luggage and dripping with sweat from the humidity. BUT....what a great opportunity to meet people and hear about their lives and ask them specifics ways we could pray for them! We even met some amazing young people coming back from a week long mission trip to Haiti and heard about what God did in and through them to help those precious people in great need!

With all the delays and divine encounters... our adventure still wasn't over! Our flight finally landed in the Dallas Fort Worth airport around 4:00 a.m in the morning and as we stood at the baggage claim a bit weary and sleepy eyed, we soon discovered we're the only ones on that flight whose luggage didn't make it! We then made our way to catch a tram to the remote parking only to find our car wouldn’t start. No Ubers are available at that time of the night/morning so a taxi cab home will have to do.

Before long our cab driver shows up and within minutes we're on the freeway heading home. But who would have thought there would be a traffic jam at that time of the morning? But as it turns out this delay was a divine appointment and we enjoyed getting to know our new friend, 'El, from Sudan for the next hour. As we began to ask him questions about his life and how he came to America we felt he needed a listening ear as it had been difficult adjusting to his new life in a new land. When he asked about our lives it was so easy to talk to him about the One who created him and who loved him so much He sent His son Jesus to die for him.

Soon El said, "I've never sought God before because I never believed He truly existed". His reason for coming to the states was to further his studies and he said that he just recently decided to read 3 holy books. Koran, Hindu, and the Bible! His heart was tender and was so hungry to know more!! As I sat in the backseat and listened to my husband share with El, all I could think about was how much God loved this man and was making Himself known!! It wasn’t long until we were pulling up to our home and said our goodbyes. I handed him a note with a few bible verses on it and our phone number in hopes that one day he would call us with more questions.

When we laid our heads down that early morning and took a deep sigh, I laid there thinking about the divine orchestration of delayed flights, lost luggage, and car trouble all to direct us to this man seeking for truth and meaning in life.

Truly the Lord seeks to save those that are lost! Don't stop praying for that loved one! God is working it out! Divine appointments are happening even in the midst of chaos in our lives! Join Him in the adventure!

Oh, and one last thing..… 'Jesús te ama' and 'Jesús ama al mundo’!
